alt-J @ The Fillmore 10.31

Emily Reiling

I’m not sure what I expected from an alt-J concert besides some groovy, ethereal vibes and an eclectic crowd for eclectic tracks, but it was certainly nothing like the loud-rocking bangers, rave-like light effects, and a sold-out crowd that seemed to know every word and nuance of every deep cut. In a word: insanity, of the best kind.

The electric atmosphere was given a spooky twist in honor of the show coinciding with Halloween–both the band and the crowd took this very seriously, with vampires and aliens singing along to the band and their crew decked out as the Simpsons. The English trio that is alt-J was segmented into three different cells, separated by bars rigged with lighting that made for some supremely cool and unique stage effects.

The 18-track set flew by and featured many of their best-known songs from the three LPs, including five from their latest release Relaxer and ending the encore with the beloved rocker “Breezeblocks.” The indie group has truly succeeded in translating their otherworldly sound into an unmissable live experience.

alt-J is currently on tour supporting Relaxer. For tickets and more information, click here. Check out photos of the set below.
